I'll just apologize in advance for my sporadic blogging. I've been focusing on my business and finding a house!! Which I finally did, I closed on it last week!! Woot woot!
I'm very excited to share all the details and the revamp with you. It's a perfect little ranch down the street from the beach and across from the marsh for my kids and I. It needs some love! I'll of course be sharing weekly updates with photos of my "budget friendly" design transformation with you all!
Today my thoughts are about the t.v...There's a three season porch that I plan to eventually turn into a den/office but for now I'll need to put my t.v. in the living room. The house has a fireplace, so the question is where do I put the "black box"? For the record, I'm not a huge television watcher so it would never be the focal point of the room. Ideally a having it integrated into a built in unit would be nice but this house doesn't have the wall room and I don't have the budget to do this right now.
Here are my options!
I could mount it to my Ikea lack bookshelf but then I'd lose the flexibility to rotate the screen, which with my set up will be key.
I could house it in my vintage armoire, but I think I'd rather use that for storage!
Both my boyfriend and brother in law suggested placing it above the fireplace, but again I don't want it to be the focal point of the room. Plus, it's a smaller space so I think it would be too high!
I think I may just hang it to the left of the mantel above a small dresser that I already own. What are your thoughts on the television? Do you prefer it tucked away or front and center? This conversation often comes up with clients. I find men and women's opinions often differ. (go figure)

I had the same issue with the living room in my new house; wanted a TV in there, but also had a fireplace and didn't want to hang the TV above (for a number of reasons which are probably similar to yours). I flanked the fireplace with bookshelves (Hemnes from IKEA) and the TV was the perfect size to fit inside (the Hemnes line is slightly wider than their Billy bookshelves). Men.....what is it with them and the over the fireplace TV mount? I love men, but just hate that look :) Anywhere but there in my book.

Roughly 20 years ago I got rid of my TV and whenever I do see one now I avoid it. What convinced me I get rid of it was that I couldn't stop watching it. Reading, painting, knitting and sewing, most of my hobbies got lost to it. I would walk into the house with an arm load of groceries and before putting them down I would turn on the TV. To help curb the habit I kept only a black and white TV. That didn't seem to help. I got rid of the small TV and got a tiny 5 or 6 inch portable. That didn't help. I tried just watching certain shows then I would make up excuses to watch whatever followed that show. There was no end to it. Talk about opiate of the masses, that was me - addicted.
I could give you several suggestions but you don't want to hear them.
Having just moved into a house in Upstate NY .. we are faced with the dilemma of where to put the TV. I don't want it seen .. but there are only so many places to put it. So I want to hide it among everything else on wall library shelves.. but the husband is not crazy about shelves. sigh ..
I've been having the tv/ fireplace issue too. When I first bought my house the tv immediately went above the fireplace (I was also married at the time so I do agree men always go with that option) but with low ceilings it was practically sitting on the mantel. I then put it on a sideboard to the left of the fireplace which was ok but it wasn't until I moved it to a long dresser away from the fireplace all together that I was happy with the room.

I like the dresser solution. You can see it easily, but it's not the focal point of the room. We have a small TV (maybe 18 inch screen) and it surprises me how often people say how tiny our TV is. I mean, unless I had a screening room or something, I'd have no need for a giant TV. So weird.
Happy new home to you! I don't so much mind seeing tvs in living rooms nowadays. They are much sleeker I hardly notice them. I would mount the tv on an adjustable arm and mount it on the bookcase or cut out the back panel and mount the arm on the wall. That way you can adjust which way the tv faces and even push it back into the bookcase when it's not in use. Best wishes with your new diggs!
Love the idea of it on a bookshelf. You'll just need to arrange seating so you don't need to swivel it. I agree with Caitlin. TVs are gross over the fireplace. Totally detract from the fireplace's charm! So don't listen to your brother-in-law. Even if he is your boyfriend. (JK semantics funny ;)
We had the exact same problem in our house, but chose to mount it within a bookcase to the right of the mantle. I still find it too conspicuous. I'l all for the chic armoire solution! Good luck!

Congrats on your new home. For your needs, the tv over the dresser tucked away works best. I don't understand the popularity of placing a tv over a fireplace. Also, new flat screen tvs are intended to be flush against the wall so placing it inside a book case or armoire defeats that purpose. The designer I used purchased a console/buffet table under our tvs to hold the components and it looks and works out great.

I love when they are as inconspicuous as possible and fortunately now with flat screens that is easier. My favorites are in the antique armoire, and over the chest in the last image it just seems to fade away. Happy weekend!!
