Thoughts on home...

Happy Friday!! So my new home is slowly coming together! The walls are painted, the electrician is almost done, the kitchen is a mess (but I hope to finish that in the next six weeks or so). I also haven't had two seconds to arrange any furniture. So please don't look at these photos as a finished product!! I'm thrilled with the grey paint and the warm floors. (they are actually quite a bit darker in person than in this shot) but I didn't go with ebony. I think that would have been too heavy with the walls.

Today I'm contemplating the fireplace. I like natural brick if it's actually constructed from nice old bricks and is in a historical home. The bricks in my house just aren't working for me. (top photo) So the question is what color do I paint them?? I'm torn between black and white, but I've shared a couple other ideas! If I go with black, I'm planning to choose a matte finish. I'm thinking a large mantel that covered more of the brick is the way to go! I'm also eventually going to incorporate built ins. (love the look below) And of course I'll switch out the screen etc...
Thoughts???
white washed brick is pretty

I am a huge fan of your blog and your style - I have been a follower for a long time, but never a commenter!
Just wanted to chime in and say that we recently had our brick surround painted in BM Black with the trim, including craftsman-era bookshelves abutting the fireplace in BM Simple White. It all looks clean, fresh, and modern, yet still appropriate for a craftsman bungalow. I don't think you will be displeased if you go with the black. Good Luck!

Would you mind sharing your paint color? Thanks!

Is the fireplace still functional? If so, I'd advise against white paint because it will get sooty and stained really easily. Our home came with a gorgeous cream and white marble fireplace surround, but I'm connnnnnnstantly scrubbing it to get smoke marks off, some of which never fully disappear. So that's my two cents! :)

white all the way! we did the identical thing in our home (1922) and when you add a more substantial mantle in white it will open the space up in a big way. we removed the insert/screen completely and have the exposed bricks open inside the fireplace. love the whole look.

What is the name of the paint color?

Looks great. What color are walls?

I think that the whitewashed brick would be gorgeous with the rich wall color and your beautiful floors. I agree that a larger, chunkier mantel is a must! Can't wait to see the finished product!

Definitely paint those bricks! I love the black bricks and the white walls.

I think that matte black would be a lovely and sophisticated complement to the gray. The color on your walls turned out beautifully!!

i think covering part of the brick with wood on the sides is a great idea! and maybe a slab of bluestone on the base? LOVE the gray painted brick in picture #2! cant wait to see the finished product!

OK, you asked... the hearth bricks are bothering me more than the "face" bricks. I love your idea to drop the mantel molding down over some of the brick.

So, remove the hearth and lay a stone with chunky dimension OR reface the hearth brick with stone tile OR paint with your idea of matte black.

I would wait to paint the face bricks until after you address the mantel and hearth, I like that used brick that much.

Fun dilemmas to have :-)

I would go for white---will give good contrast with grey and open up even more with the addition of a white mantle.

I like the idea of black, but with your wall color, will there be enough contrast?

If you paint it black, will there be enough contrast with the wall color?

I lean toward paneling the fireplace surround with applied moldings and trim, painted or pine.

Thank you with respect to spreading this approach Hide TV. Simply put I genuinely wish to shop for structure and then input it too for our TV. Impressive!
