Shelter Loves....
Happy Fri-yay!! I had a great design meeting today with a client I have worked with in the past! A big part of my business involves building relationships. I love watching my clients lives evolve and their families grow. The personal connections I make through my job is one of the most rewarding aspects!
I was working away on quite a few projects this week so my brain is in need of a day off.. Here is what caught my eye in the process! Peace out, have a relaxing weekend!
1. I designed a nursery yesterday. I love creating spaces for children that they can grow into. Designer, Nick Olsen did just that with this beautiful nursery design. Image via Veranda.
2. I'm kinda digging the platform wedge shoes that are out right now. They are stylish and comfy..A win, win in my book!
3. God, don't we all know this!! I've got to learn to move on a bit better.
4. I've decided to finally finish my personal photo wall in my home. I loved this mix of images and the simple framing used here.
5. + 6. My wonderful client and I walked through her new home today. It is a beautiful house with so much opportunity. We talked about injecting her home with moments of black and white stripes. The classic combo is perfect when done right! This Dorothy Draper designed floor is a great example of the look I adore! I'm also loving this moto jacket layered over a summery striped dress. Find a similar dress here.

Sweet as pie....
Hello Tuesday! My weekend was fabulous, I hope yours was too!!
I needed a pick me up post today. I'm missing my son's first day of first grade tomorrow so I am feeling a bit weepy about that. (I have to jet off for a quick business trip today).
How precious is this nursery?? I love that it is a room to grow into....... Design by Carla Lane. at the Santa Barbara Designer Showhouse. Lulu Dk wallpaper and fabrics

Thoughts on home....
![]() |
My apologies for not posting much about my house revamp. I sort of needed a financial and mental break from it all this summer. I have however been dreaming up a ton of ideas and have a "to do" check list a mile long. I would love to finish out one space and have decided to finish off my children's bedrooms. My son's room is almost complete but I have an empty wall and he has a ton of books! He has always loved to learn and have books read to him. I've been keeping my eye out for some kind of shelving system to both organize and display his rotating and growing book collection. (his current obsession is Sharks) These shelving units become a beautiful art wall in a sense. I've included the resources below for two different options. I'm going with the "card display" shelves, the price can't be beat. The more expensive version appears a bit more substantial. |

Sail Aweigh
Good Morning! It's gorgeous out here today! I spent the morning catching up on work but I wanted to share a nursery project that I recently completed with you.
The biggest challenge was the size of the space but we wanted to make it as user friendly as possible. (it was hard to capture even the crib area with the camera). Luckily the client (my sister in this case was able to use a changing table/dresser in a nearby room).
I don't like to create rooms that are obviously too thematic and cutesy but I was inspired by the sea and sailing on this one! We created a space that little Alex can grow into. There's room for a twin bed and dresser once the crib is removed.
I used all Ace hardware's Clark+Kensington paint on the project. Here are the colors:
Walls: in a deep navy blue: Heirloom China 37C-7, vintage table: Precious Peonies 06D-4
Other sources: lamp: vintage, artwork: boat bottom photograph (will provide name), pillows: misc. all via Homegoods, table: vintage repainted, chair: Boston Interiors, crib: Room and Board, Rug: Rugs USA, chandelier: Pottery Barn (slightly different version now, I would change the shades to white linen, Aweigh Print: here - then I had it custom framed, beach photograph: Christian Chaize
Photography: Ann-Marie Rollo - images property of Ace Hardware, Interior Design - Julie Richard, Shelter.

Shelter Loves....
This week I'm loving aztec inspired patterns and citrus hues! Here's the background on this week's thoughts and finds:
1. One beautiful bauble is all you need to finish off an outfit.
2. Pretty in pink. This bedroom is sweet and simple..I've been working on my daughter's room. It's pale pink, purple and cream. (with a few other shades mixed in)
3. I'd LOVE to make these. I'm sure they're much yummier than the Hostess version....
4. I'll take this entire outfit. I love mixing unexpected pieces.
5. YES!
6. I never tire of chinoiserie inspired prints. This lamp is adorable.
7. I'm seeing Aztec inspired prints everywhere for Spring and Summer.

Gift Guide - for little ones
I thoroughly enjoy shopping for the little ones in my life! I find I discover more unique items on-line or in boutiques then at the mall. Here is a selection of my favorite finds this year!
1. Every child needs a set of blocks. I love watching their little creative minds in action. I prefer wooden toys over plastic ones for a slew of reasons....
2. How sweet are these booties?
3. I like to keep a few hats on hand for each of my children. I'm liking this simple pink one from Crewcuts. It looks as if it will actually stay on!
4. Books! I never tire of "new" children's books. When my life feels chaotic I try to remind myself that someday my young children won't want to snuggle up with me and read a story.
5. My daughter loves her "stuffies", as she calls them. I can't resist buying her a new one each year.
6. I like to give my children (my mom started the tradition) a new pair of pj's on Christmas Eve. I always splurge on better quality ones....
7. I love vests (I've posted about this in the past) - therefore my children also own them! ;)
8. What young child doesn't love to push "stuff" around in "things" with wheels. This cart may be under the tree for my daughter this year. This is plastic but it would work well outdoors and for the beach.
9. One word: adorable!!
10. As a designer I have a weakness for wall art. Visit this Etsy shop for an array of colorful prints.

Shelter Loves
1. I'm loving this long, over sized pendant necklace. It's a little hint as to where my head is right now!! via
2. I adore this take on a Dorothy Draper style dresser, available here
3. Adorable closet set-ups
4. I see me living in these Tory Burch ballet flats this Fall.
5. I pinned this Mary McDonald designed light fixture from Lumen's this week.
6. My dream is to visit the Amalfi coast next year. Positano, Italy is at the top of my list and staying at Il San Pietro hotel seems like a must!
xx

Style me Pretty: Shelter + Bellini Portraits
If you’re anything like us, running a creative business is definitely high up on the bucket list. Doing something you love, sticking close to family, and challenging yourself creatively is a dream come true. Thus, we are SO excited to introduce you to someone who is not only doing just that, she’s also juggling a gaggle of little ones to boot! Boston based interior designer Julie Richard of Shelter Design has partnered up with the equally fabulous Bellini Portrats to give you guys a behind the scenes look at all things Shelter. Oh, and there’s a gallery if you need just a bit more pretty!
From Stephanie of Bellini Portraits… I’m a portrait photographer south of Boston and feature local “mamaprenuers” on my blog a few times a year. This is Julie Richard of Shelter Design, an incredible interior design company. I spent a morning with her and her two beautiful kiddos capturing shots of a normal morning routine and details around her home. I had the pleasure of interviewing this talented woman, and here’s a little re-cap of our time together:
How long have you been in business?
Four years
Please explain a little bit about your product/business and how you developed the concept behind it:|
I obtained my master’s degree in interior design in 2004 and worked for a number of elite firms in Boston before branching out on my own. I knew I had the passion, ideas, training and experience to launch my own firm.
Shelter is a full service interior design firm that specializes in residential interiors. I work on an array of projects with small or large budgets. I want my clients to feel that great design is accessible. I try to incorporate not only high-end items into my projects, but also include artwork from sites like Etsy, vintage pieces from flea markets and shops and archival fabrics. I view the designer-client relationship as collaborative. My vision is infused into each design, but only if it reflects my client’s style, tastes, and needs.
Design is all about the art of transforming environments, but you also need to know how to execute your ideas. I have established relationships with a number of craftsman and workrooms in the Boston area and feel that these collaborations bring a quality to my work that sets Shelter apart from other firms. I believe that good design is all about the details. It is my role to introduce items, concepts, color schemes and ideas that the client may not have considered.
Tell us more about your business, Shelter Design?
My goal is to create dynamic spaces. Many of my clients know what they like but often have trouble creating a cohesive design. That’s where I come in. I work closely with clients to create the perfect space for them. It is also my role to introduce them to new sources and ideas. I usually design custom pieces for every project. I. I am in the process of creating a furniture line of upholstered pieces. When I cannot find the perfect piece for a job, I just design it! I really want my clients’ homes and projects to feel personal and unique. I try to stay away from anything that looks contrived, overdone, or predictable.
What is the hardest part or have been some of your struggles starting your own business?
Making time for everything!! I would love to fit more design related travel into my schedule. Sifting through all the paperwork and accounting is extremely time consuming. I could spend half my week on those tasks, but I would much rather be designing, sketching, and finding new product sources.
How many children do you have?
I have two children, a three-year-old son named Colby and a one-year-old daughter named Emerson. I was pregnant with my son when I began my business.
What are some of the creative ways you have found to juggle being a woman, a mother, and a business owner?
Most days are very busy. I try to keep the kids and myself on track with a routine, but I am also open to deviating from our daily routine. Children are bright little people and can sense when you are stressed out. I try to keep them engaged with creative play. We draw, dance, sing, play outdoors etc.I also need down time, so I make time for myself. I exercise, and meet friends for a glass of wine. A happy mother makes for a better mother and a more efficient business owner. Writing my blog is time consuming but it is also an escape. I love to read other design blogs. They are very inspiring. Daily:– I keep a detailed to do list. I do this for all personal and professional “tasks.”– I write down all my professional and personal appointments on my day calendar.– I enter them into my I-phone, too. I cannot rely solely on my phone. There is something reassuring about writing them down.– I am constantly sketching ideas in my sketchbook and tearing inspiring ideas from magazines. I have a huge inspiration board in my office, so when I sit down to design my creative space is engaging.– I note weekly appointments, reminders and inspiring quotes on a large chalkboard wall in my kitchen. If it’s on the wall, it absolutely will not be missed!!– Finally, exercising at least three times a week helps me keep a clear head!
Who is your biggest inspiration?
Personally, my immediate family, my parents, and sister are. They are very supportive, hardworking, and creative! Professionally, designers from the past inspire me. My short list includes Dorothy Draper, Frances Elkins, and Coco Chanel. These women took risks, pushed societal boundaries, and were creative geniuses during a time when many women didn’t work. Their designs remain classic today. And for the men, I often look to David Hicks, Albert Hadley, and Warren Platner for inspiration. As far as current icons, I am continually in awe of Kelly Wearstler. She breaks the rules and is a master with color. I’m drawn to her unique and glamorous style. She has done an amazing job branding herself and her products. Design is my passion. I could talk for days about inspiration and admired icons.
